More About the Vermont State Fair
As the final summer hurrah in Vermont, the State Fair is well-attended and combines rudest, entertainment, agricultural exhibits, concerts, races, and competitions. The Vermont State Fair got its start in 1846 in a field near Castleton (at that time, it was called the Rutland State Fair). Under the direction of Frederick Button, the first President of the Rutland County Agricultural Society, the event eventually grew into the Vermont State Fair.
In 1849, the fair became so popular that the Rutland Railroad had to put extra cars onto their trains to accommodate all of the extra passengers from Western New York and Vermont. Originally a one-day event, the fair wasn’t given a permanent home in Rutland until 1856.
You’ll get to enjoy a bit of Vermont history as you walk around sipping apple cider and biting into delicious funnel cakes and fresh-cut fries (and maple ice cream!). With the largest midway in the state of Vermont, you and your kiddos will love the 50+ rides and games that sprinkle the area surrounding the grandstand. In addition to the events listed above, you’ll also find lumberjack and wood chopping competitions, giant pumpkin weigh-off contests, and more.
